Jan 11, 2010 Hong Kong leads IPO race
HONG KONG - HONG KONG'S stock exchange was the world's hottest IPO market last year with more than US$30 billion (S$41.7 billion) in new listings, but it stands accused of sacrificing quality for quantity.
The bourse is keen to stay ahead of rival Shanghai and attract non-Chinese companies, but criticism has mounted after the controversial approval of Russian aluminium giant UC Rusal's share sale and a string of listing debacles. The exchange repeatedly delayed approving Rusal's US$2.6 billion initial public offering (IPO).
Unproven allegations that chief executive Oleg Deripaska has links to organised crime dogged the world's biggest aluminium maker in its attempts to become the first Russian company to list in Hong Kong. And when the listing was finally approved last month, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) stepped in with what observers call 'unprecedented' restrictions for the IPO.
The SFC stipulated a minimum investment in Rusal equivalent to about US$130,000 - reportedly a bid to shield small investors from the complicated offering.
'It was quite a surprise that the SFC agreed to Rusal's listing,' said Raymond Chan, acting director of the Centre for Corporate Governance and Financial Policy at Hong Kong Baptist University. 'I think the exchange and SFC are aware of the quality problem.'
Mr Chan warned that the exchange could be putting its reputation at risk. 'Listing in Hong Kong would be associated with low quality.' -- AFP

The key to using awards as an Internet marketing device is in giving ratings - not prizes. It's cheaper, but the real benefit is that ratings enable you to get your online business noticed.
Pandecta, for example, lists the top 20 free business e-zines. For every e-zine that makes the list, we e-mail the author to congratulate him or her. That e-mail does two things:
(1) It is designed to convince the author that the Pandecta top 20 is an exclusive club, and that being rated there is a fantastic achievement (which it is).
(2) We attach this image for them to place on their sites to enhance the credibility of their own sales efforts.

2...E-zines (Newsletters)
The amount of work required to maintain a top e-zine makes this marketing technique unsuitable for most. It is no good to send out an average e-zine. In Internet marketing, your e-zine is the image of you online business.
Give it away for free, include as little advertisements as possible and as much content as possible. Don't try to make money off your e-zine. It is a tool. It reminds people of your products and establishes you as an expert in your field.
3...Premiums
In the real world, premiums include coffee mugs, ties, key chains etc. A high quality logo and/or company name is printed on it and it is handed out for free.
An online business can also utilize all these in Internet marketing, but think about screen savers, backgrounds, mouse pointers, mouse pads etc. As long as it is free and looks great, people will use it and be reminded of your business every time they do.

Ideally, every product you sell should include a bonus. It is a widely used marketing technique on the Internet so users almost expect it.
For example: "Buy this gardening book for just $17 and get a free 4-day e-mail course on creative garden design!".
The bonus should be a high quality product. Something you'd be able to sell on its own. That way you create that fuzzy feeling with prospective clients. Fuzzy? Yes fuzzy. Make them like you. They'll associate your business/products with that warm (fuzzy) feeling you get when you find a great bargain.
7...Free Samples
On the Internet, as in real life, free samples attract attention. If the sample is good, attention turns into new sales.

This is important. If you deceive your visitor she'll hit that dreaded back button before your entire page loads. Your page should deliver on the promises you make in the site description.

Always e-mail your customer within 24 hours after the sale. Thank them for their support. Ensure them that they can count on you for assistance, if needed.

There is a nasty rumor that press releases don't work. Not true!
Press releases can be a fabulous tool for business promotion ... IF they are properly written and presented.
A problem occurs because most people are not aware of the special requirements of press releases. A press release is not a page-long advertisement. A press release is not a novel.
A press release is not a tell-all promotional piece that is full of detail.
So what IS a press release and how do you write one that will actually get placed? Let's go over a few basics that will help you in your press campaign.
A CHANGE IN TARGET AUDIENCE
The first mistake commonly made is writing a press release with your business target audience in mind.
Unlike advertising copy, which is written to appeal to your customer, a press release is written to appeal to a journalist.
The journalist is not someone who is seeking to buy your product or service. A journalist is looking to fill a news need.
When writing a press release, you must meet that need by filling the reporter's requirements. Rather than answering the question, "What's in it for me", answer the question, "Why would ABC magazine's readers care"?
The headline also takes on a new focus. Rather than using a headline proclaiming the benefits of your product, use a headline that proclaims its newsworthiness.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
One common error is submitting a press release without first reading the publication.
It is virtually impossible to provide timely, news-oriented information to a site or magazine if you have no idea what interests their readers have.
Do a little homework before submitting. Visit the Web and look at the stories the site offers. Buy a copy of the magazine or newspaper and review the common interests of its readers.
By understanding what the publication is looking for, you will be able to fulfill the need and thus get a much better response from your press release.
DON'T CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU
The biggest irritant reporters have is receiving calls from writers asking if the press release was received. Worse yet, asking if it was read.
Journalists are very busy people. They get hundreds of press releases a day.
I have actually heard reporters say that they throw away the releases of those people who call them.
Resist the urge to phone. Once you submit your press release, rest assured you will be contacted if there is an interest.
PUT IT IN THE RIGHT HANDS
Just like advertisements, press releases must be placed in strategic areas. Search the Web for outlets to run your release. A few I have gotten good response from are:

Also, email your press release to the appropriate person at individual magazines, newspapers and Web sites. Target those that would be read by your customers.
Be sure to find the correct name and email address for the reporter who handles stories related to your business. Releases that are sent to incorrect contacts are most likely thrown away... not forwarded on to someone else.
KISS
Keep it short silly! Press releases are not meant to tell the whole story. They are meant to give the reporter an idea of what's happening in your business that their readers need to know about.
If the journalist would like additional information or would like to arrange for an interview, he/she will call.
Your press release should be approximately 400 words - 500 maximum.
I know, all this sounds like a list of nit-picky rules. Not really. Just like with advertising copy, you must give your reader what he needs.
Write a newsworthy release that meets the criteria of the reporter and his/her subscribers. The time you take to do so will pay off. As you know - when you fill a need, you get results.
